Please make sure you and/or your child uses the restroom before the swim lesson.
At GTRS, the pool locker rooms are located underneath the stairs you walk down to get to the pool area.
-
Please ensure your child wears a proper fitting swimwear and/or swim diaper. And please make sure their hair is tied back away from their face.
Sunsuits or rash-guards are not recommended to wear in indoor pool environments; this has a tendency to make them colder quicker.
It may be recommended by the instructor to get a half or full wetsuit. The compression and added buoyancy also helps their body retain warmth and eases body tension when learning new skills.
-
A “code brown” from a child (toilet trained and/or not wearing a properly fitting swim diaper) that results in a pool closure, will be fully responsible for the full cost of pool maintenance.
-
Speaking to your child during the lesson is distracting. Interruptions are strongly discouraged.
If there are behavioral issues with your child during the lesson, the instructor will handle the situation with a time-out or loss of privileges. If the issues persist, the instructor will summon you over.
-
We love for you to watch the lesson; however, please keep in mind that children respond to instruction differently when they know their parent/guardian is watching.
For instructor and child safety, we like you either being in eyesight or earshot of your child at all times during the lesson.
-
Before the lesson begins, please get the instructors approval to video or take photos during the lesson.
You do not have consent to video tape more than 30 seconds of a swim lesson.
If you are posting the video on social media, please ask the instructor for consent.
-
Please do not give your child anything to eat or drink at least 60 – 90 minutes prior to their swim lesson. They will be working hard in the water and it’s best to do this on an empty stomach.
Please show up at least 5 – 10 minutes before your scheduled class time. When you come into the health club, please sign in at the desk clipboard before you go down the stairs to the pool area. You may use the wet locker rooms to change for classes. You are welcome to use the towels provided by the resort during your lessons.
With a few minutes before class time, please walk over and take a rinse-off shower for 30 – 60 seconds, washing your bottom with soap and water. This is a Michigan State Law and must be followed.
You and/or your children are NOT ALLOWED to enter in the water before your swim lesson. Even if you are a Resort Member, this is a good habit to get into so the child knows that this is “class time” and not “play time”. This also allows them to have their peak energy for swim lessons. Please wait for the okay from your instructor before entering the water.
-
Please make sure you are in either eyesight or earshot of your child.
If the child needs to use the restroom, for safety reasons, instructors cannot take them; they must go alone or be escorted by you.
Speaking to your child during class is distracting for your child, so interruptions are strongly discouraged.
We would love for you to watch the lessons; however, children respond differently to instruction when they know their parent/guardian is watching. Instructors may ask you to reorient yourself on the pool deck if they notice the child being distracted. Please ask the instructor if you’d like permission to take photos or videos of your child before the swim lesson begins. Sometimes this can be distracting for the child.
If there are behavioral issues with the child, the instructor will handle the situation on their own. If they need support from you, they will summon you over.
-
Sometimes, transitions are tough for children and it’s hard to get out of the pool when the lesson is over.
As the instructor finishes up the lesson, please stand at the exit point with a towel ready. This is a great signal to the child that class is over, and it’s time to get out.
Helping support the instructor is important and greatly appreciated to ensure classes stay on schedule.
Make sure to take a rinse off or shower after the swim lesson.

Creating new muscle memory is a process that requires a lot of repetition, and it doesn’t happen after a few lessons. We are creating important building blocks for critical lifesaving and life-long skills.
Please do not do anything that would interfere with the skills they are building in swim lessons - putting them in puddle jumpers, re-teaching them in your way, etc.
